My Viva Loca I was walking home from the gym today and I walked past this guy who was probably 63 years old who looked pretty normal but had a small sign that said, "As you walk on by remember the homeless...anything helps." At first glance I did the usual, "Sorry I gave my change to the guy down the street." as I read his sign and continued walking. About four paces down the sidewalk it hit me. What did his sign mean? As you walk on by remember the homeless. Did I? What am I supposed to remember about them? That they need help? In my self absorbed state of mind I shrugged it off and continued home. I was in the middle of eating my lunch when I began to think about that guy. I started to wonder what his life was like. Where was he born? Was he married? Did he ever have a steady job? etc...Why would he choose my street to sit on? Was he actually there to remind me to slow down in life. To not move so fast that you take no time to remember what you have been through? This lead me to start thinking about my life so far. At this moment I am a 29 year old jewish male living in Seattle working as a pharmaceutical rep living in a home my fiancee and I purchased, with a dog. To many people, besides living in a relatively large city, it is a normal life. Even I sometimes think I have a normal life. But if I take a moment to remember some of my defining moments my life seems less ordinary. Taking a second to listen to my past talk to me the most random images began poping in my head. I could not believe all I had forgot to remember...so I am going to write a few so that I can rest assure that they are less likely to be misplaced in my memory bank: 1. Spent the night on the street with homeless people in San Sebastian Spain 2. Jumped 14500 feet out of an airplane 3. Bungy jumped in the Swiss Alps 4. Danced my ass off on the tables of every tent at Oktoberfest in Munich 5. Packed my car and without a job/place to live moved from sunny california to grey seattle knowing only two people 6. Moved from working in a lab to pharmaceutical sales with no experience and recieved Sales Consultant of the year in less than two years in an enormous pharmaceutical company. 7. Proposed on the Saint Charles Bridge in Prague 8. Made a comment on Jerry Springer 9. Played on all the sets of a top 10 television show NCIS,saw live tapings and met the entire cast of Saved by the Bell,Full House and Blossom. And I starred in an afterschool special when I was 12, a target commercial, lazer pro 9000 commercial, and a game show called double up 10. Purchased an amazing home 11. Have traveled in the US to New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco,LA,San Antonio,Las Vegas,Scottsdale,Portland,Orlando,San Diego,Houston,Providence,Newark/Hoboken, Maui to name a few. 12. I have traveled to London,Brussells,Amsterdamn,Berlin,Prague,Copenhaggen,Munich,Interlakken,Rome,Venice,Cinque Terre,Florence,Nice,Barcelona,Zaragosa,San Sebastian,Paris, Vancouver BC,Puerto Vallarta,Cabo San Lucas and Milan. 13. I met the doctor that delivered me in Zaragosa Spain and have my original birth records 14. I attended a four year university and recieved a bachelor of science degree WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! That is only what is on the top of my mind right now. Let me tell you that taking a moment to remember your past is like a whole new start. I now sit patiently for number 15,16,17 etc to come rushing to my head. It feels so good to know life can be so diverse. Who knows maybe my list will reach the thousands. |
